  1. In 1768, France occupied the islands and in 1794 they were seized
  2. by Britain.  From 1814 they were ruled as part of Mauritius and
  3. in 1903 they became a separate colony.  Complete independence was
  4. obtained on June 29, 1976 and the first President was ousted in a
  5. coup a year later.  A new constitution was announced in March
  6. 1979 and the country has been turned into a one-party state.
